Five-number bet (American roulette)
The five-number bet, also called the basket or top line, is a wager on a double-zero layout covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. It pays 6 to 1 and is the only standard bet on that wheel whose house edge differs from the usual 5.26%.
The reason is arithmetic. Every other American-wheel bet pays as though the wheel had 36 pockets while it has 38, which gives the familiar 2/38 = 5.26% cost. Five numbers cannot be paid on that pattern, since 36 divided by 5 is not a whole number, so the payout is rounded down to 6 to 1 instead of 6.2 to 1.
For a $1 stake: five pockets win $6, thirty-three lose $1. Expected result = (5 × 6 − 33) / 38 = −3/38, or −7.89%. On a $5 chip that is about 39 cents lost per spin on average, against 26 cents for $5 on red.
Nothing about the wheel changes for this bet; the extra cost comes entirely from the payout table. Coverage of five pockets looks generous, and the bet wins on 5 of 38 spins, but a hit rate only becomes a price once it is set beside the payout. The same check, pockets covered against payout offered, gives 5.26% for every other American-layout wager and 2.70% on a single-zero wheel, as laid out bet by bet at [https://casinohouseedge.com/roulette-house-edge/ https://casinohouseedge.com/roulette-house-edge/].
